Denarius in dominant Doomben display

Jan 31, 2015

Racing in blinkers for the first time helped Denarius produce a powerful performance to return to the winner’s stall in the Impact Roofing Handicap (1110m) at Doomben.

Denarius won on debut at the course as a two-year-old before turning in a solid first-up effort when beaten less than a length at Doomben on New Year’s Day.

Trainer Brian Wakefield, who also bred the three-year-old, added blinkers to Denarius’s gear but the son of Red Element still had to do it tough to notch his second-up success.

Apprentice Travis Wolfgram was unable to get Denarius in closer than three-wide after the gelding began the $65,000 race only fairly.

However, the young jockey was able to get cover for Denarius nearing the 600m before taking a trail into the race rounding the home turn.

Wolfgram waited until Denarius was balanced in the straight before asking the inexperienced galloper for an effort but the smart prospect answered his rider’s call like a good horse at the 200m.

Denarius made light of the wide run as he displayed an emphatic turn of foot to sweep past the leaders in the final 50m to score what turned out to be a soft win by three-quarters of a length.

Denarius’s second win from four outings earned connections $66,100 in prizemoney and bonuses, taking his earnings to more than $84,000 with the promise of plenty more to come as he learns his trade.

Congratulations to Denarius’s owners and all involved with the exciting galloper’s strong win.
