Grayson Square makes brilliant start to career at Doomben
Aug 25, 2012
rayson Square made the perfect start to his career as part of the Brian Wakefield Racing operation with a stunning debut win at Doomben.
Wakefield threw the three-year-old into the deep end in the Dulux Project Services Handicap (1200m) after the gelding turned in a promising trial effort when second in a Doomben hit-out on July 3.
Few punters gave Grayson Square a hope of scoring a debut win, sending him out as a $31 chance but there was no sense of fluke about the son of Savabeel's victory.
Grayson Square jumped smartly from barrier two to settle behind the tearaway leader Doubtfilly before experienced international jockey Grant Cooksley allowed the horse to close on the leader approaching the home turn.
Grayson Square got on terms with Doubtfilly early in the staight before getting the upper hand over the runner-up under Cooksley's urgings in the final 100 metres.
Defeating Doubtfilly on debut was an outstanding showing of Grayson Square's ability because the filly finished fourth to the champion colt Pierro in the Golden Slipper and also finished fourth in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes in the autumn.
Wakefield paid $NZ105,000 for Grayson Square at last year's New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka.
Grayson Square repaid $32,000 of his purchase price with his first-up victory.
