Denarius returns to Winners Circle in fine style.

Nov 26, 2016

Denarius made a spectacular return to the Winners Circle today at Eagle Farm in the GH Mumm Handicap for the the Tattersalls Race Club.

Jumping from the coveted inside gate, Denarius bucked a recent trend of horses having to come away from the fence on the new Eagle Farm surface to be competitive.  Denarius got away well from the gates & settled mid-field on the fence. The horse travelled beautifully throughout the race & was ready to pounce on the leading division when the field was turning for home.

When the field came away from the rail as expected, it gave Denarius plenty of room to come through on the fence to record a strong win by two lengths on the line.

A pre-race plan of sticking to the fence was followed to the letter by Jockey Andrew Spinks. "I was a bit worried when we drew the one gate but watching a few races being run today, they got got closer to the fence as the day went on. The horse had been working a treat & jarred up last start on the firm track at Doomben. I t was pleasing to get the win here today" Spinks said.

Trainer Brian Wakefield was delighted with the win after a frustrating run last time in with the horse. "I have been waiting to get this fellow over here to Eagle Farm. He has had the majority of his career at Doomben. He appreciated the wide open spaces here & was able to balance up. The way the races have been run at Doomben, he just seems to be chasing them & not able to get balanced. We have not had a great run with barrier draws either & it was a welcome change of luck today." Wakefield said after the race. "The horses in the stable have been racing well without luck for quite some time & it has been very frustrating at times"

It was a welcome return to the Winners Circle for connections also and the win was celebrated with quite a few glasses of GH Mumm Champagne afterwards with the kind sponsors of the race.
